Muslim Heritage Sites in Britain

List of the earliest mosques, prayer halls and historically significant Muslim and Islamic Heritage sites in Britain.

We are consistently adding more buildings and sites to this list as and when we find out about them. As there are rumoured to be more than 1500 mosques in Britain, we are mainly interested in the ones that where established before the 1980s. If you know of any that you believe should be on this list, then please get in touch with the details.

We have heard of prayer halls/rooms being established in the port towns of London, Cardiff, South Shields, Glasgow, Liverpool etc by 'lascars' (sailors) even before the first mosques and a settlement of 'Arabs' in Manchester in the early 1800s which may have established a communal prayer hall. We would be very interested if anyone knows any more.

Getting involved - Why not ask around and find out when your local mosque was opened and then do your own heritage research and find out where the community prayed before it was established.
